Generally speaking, there are 2 main types of data recovery. These types are as follows:

• Software / Viral Problems- If you have lost certain pieces of data due to software problems or contraction of a computer virus, there are steps that can be taken to restore the lost data, assuming that it hasn't been permanently erased due to the software / viral problem. It should be said that for the most part, someone who does not have a complete understanding of the default settings of their PC should not expect to be able to recover lost data due to a software/viral/hardware problem based on their limited knowledge of their system. In some cases, users will take the basic knowledge that they have, and simply employ a "guess & check" method of recovery, generally worsening the condition.
