data recovery cont.
Generally speaking, there are 2 main types of data recovery. These types are as follows:
-
Software / Viral Problems- If you have lost certain pieces of data due to software problems or contraction of a computer virus, there are steps that can be taken to restore the lost data, assuming that it hasn't been permanently erased due to the software / viral problem. If the data in question is textual, then there is a greater chance that it can be recovered (at least in part) than say a binary file, due to the fact that it only takes one misplaced byte to corrupt a program.
- Hardware Problems / Physical Damage to Disk- The sad fact that must be realized in terms of physical damage to the hard disk is that there is no software program that can have any effect on it. When it comes to lost data that is the result of some kind of hardware problem, more often than not, the only way that all or some of your lost data may be recovered is through the intervention of an expensive 'clean room' technician who can basically take your computer apart piece by piece so as to find the origin of the failure. This type of service is available through Data Recovery Labs.
It should be said that for the most part, someone who does not have a complete understanding of the default settings of their PC should not expect to be able to recover lost data due to a software/viral/hardware problem based on their limited knowledge of their system. In some cases, users will take the basic knowledge that they have, and simply employ a "guess & check" method of recovery, generally worsening the condition.
